On October 2, 2023, Hope Gas acquired Peoples Gas WV and now provides your natural gas service.

Hope Gas, headquartered in Morgantown, West Virginia, proudly provides safe and reliable natural gas service to approximately 125,000 homes and businesses throughout the Mountain State. We have been serving West Virginia customers for 125 years. Our team of over 400 employees operates and maintains more than 6900 miles of natural gas pipelines throughout West Virginia.

Hope Gas and Peoples are working together to ensure a seamless transition of your service. There will be a transition period of up to 12 months. You will likely still see the Peoples logo on service vehicles and online payment platforms during this transition period.

  • Pipeline Maintenance. The top priority of Hope Gas is to provide safe and reliable service to our customers. Our operations team monitors and maintains our distribution pipelines and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to natural gas emergencies.
    During the transition period with Peoples, your gas emergency hotline is still 1-800-400-4271. Please call this number for any natural gas emergencies.
  • Monthly billing. Starting in October, you will begin receiving a bill with a combination of Peoples Gas rates previously approved by the Public Service Commission of West Virginia (“PSC”), as well the PSC approved Hope Gas Legacy Surcharge rate. This bill will be for the gas service you used during the prior 30 days. Your monthly bill will be comprised of a Customer Charge, a Commodity Charge, a Demand Charge, and a Delivery Charge. The Delivery Charge will now include the Hope Gas Legacy Surcharge described below.
  • Customer Charge. You will continue to pay the Peoples Gas PSC approved customer charge. The monthly customer charge covers certain fixed costs that are incurred each month regardless of the amount of gas used by customers. This charge includes such things as meter reading, billing, customer accounting, operating and maintenance expenses.
  • Commodity Charge. The PSC approved Commodity Charge is based on the amount of gas you use each month. This charge is a pass through of the cost of natural gas.
  • Demand Charge. In late 2022, the PSC authorized a fixed per month Purchased Gas Adjustment (“PGA”) cost recovery for Residential customers. The fixed portion of the PGA is reflected on your bill as a Demand Charge.
  • Delivery Charge. This charge is the cost of delivering natural gas to your home or business through the company’s distribution system. The Legacy Surcharge is a new charge on your bill that will be added into your delivery charge. These dollars go directly to system improvements to ensure safe and reliable service.
  • Thousands of customers in your service territory rely on the former Equitrans gathering pipeline for the delivery of their natural gas into the system. We understand there have been times you have experienced gas outages due to system issues in the past. In May 2023, Hope purchased 900 miles of this gathering pipeline to enhance reliability to our customers. We understand the issues, and they will be addressed by our expert operations team. The issues will not be fixed overnight, but we will fix them. We ask for your patience and support as we make the repairs necessary to provide you with safe and reliable natural gas service for many years to come.
  • All Peoples Gas rates you will continue to pay and the Hope Gas Legacy Surcharge rate you will begin to pay are approved by the PSC. You can learn more about the PSC at
  • Payment Options. During the transition period with Peoples, you do not need to make any changes to your online payment information. If you pay by check, please continue to make your checks payable to Peoples.
  • Customer Service. Our customer service team is looking forward to serving you! During the transition period with Peoples, you will continue to contact Peoples’ customer service team at 1-800-764-0111. They are available Monday through Friday from 7:00 am – 5:00 pm.
