Morgan O’Brien
President and CEO
Morgan K. O’Brien is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Hope Gas and Hope Utilities. A native Pittsburgher from a blue-collar, Irish-Catholic home, O’Brien was raised to value family, faith, and integrity. He has relied upon those values to ignite Hope’s resurgence and found a kindred belief system in the Mountain State, allowing him to develop a deep and moving affection for the people and places of West Virginia.
An energetic and insightful leader, O’Brien is dedicated to working with leaders across government, industry, and education sectors to create family-sustaining jobs and propel West Virginia forward as a national leader and innovator. He has significantly expanded Hope Gas operations to provide energy to 140,000 families and businesses across 39 of West Virginia’s 55 counties. This homegrown job creation has increased the company’s workforce to more than 600 employees and broadens the possibilities for the next generation to build careers and families in their home state.
Before bringing his vision and work ethic to West Virginia, O’Brien served as CEO at Duquesne Light Co., providing electric service to 600,000 southwestern Pennsylvanians. He later served as CEO at Peoples Gas, serving Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky.
He successfully helped both companies expand their workforce, customer base, and total investor value and integrated his beliefs to mold both companies into true community partners and champions. They continue to invest in and collaborate with many organizations that drive economic development and improve the region’s quality of life.
O’Brien, who earned his degrees from Robert Morris University, is active in civic organizations, including serving as chair of his alma mater’s board of trustees. He serves on many other boards as well, including those of Matthews International, Watt Fuel Cell Co., and Dollar Energy. He also co-chairs Pittsburgh Works Together and the African American Chamber.
He believes that the success of Hope Gas is closely linked to the state’s growth, with the 125-year-old company poised to thrive as West Virginia prospers. With O’Brien at the helm, Hope Gas is investing in a new generation filled with hope and innovating in energy, healthcare, education, technology, and more.
