Your safety comes first. If you smell gas, hear a hissing sound, or see signs of a leak:
- Leave the area immediately. Don't try to find the leak source.
- Warn others nearby to leave too.
- From a safe distance (a neighbor's home or down the street), call 911 first.
- Then call the Hope Gas 24/7 Emergency Hotline: 1-800-934-3187.
Signs of a Gas Leak:

- Dead or discolored vegetation near the pipeline
- Hissing or whistling sound near the pipeline or any gas appliances
- Dirt or debris blowing into the air
- Bubbles in water-covered areas or in the toilet
- Flames (if the leak has ignited)
Immediate steps to take if you suspect a gas leak:
- Leave the area immediately.
- Don’t use electronics or open flames.
- Don’t try to fix the problem.
- Call 911 and then the Hope Gas Emergency Hotline at 1-800-934-3187 from a safe location. Our personnel are available 24/7 in case of an emergency.
If you call the Hope Gas 24/7 Emergency Hotline (1-800-934-3187), follow the instructions provided to you during the call:
- This is an emergency. Natural gas can explode. Avoid causing a spark or ignition source:
- Do not open a garage door or start a car.
- Leave all electrical appliances and lights as they are; do not turn them on or off.
- Do not flip an electrical switch, ring a doorbell, touch appliances, or use electronics, including your phone.
- Do not operate vehicles or power equipment where leaking natural gas may be present.
- Do not investigate or attempt to locate gas leaks.
- If access is needed inside an on-site structure, someone 18 years or older must be present. If we cannot gain access, we will turn off the gas to make the property safe.
- If there is a hit line or natural gas blowing, call 911 from a safe distance—we recommend 330 feet, approximately the length of a football field.
- Please meet our Hope Gas employee when they arrive and identify yourself.
