Hope Gas begins a major Pipeline Replacement and Expansion Program (PREP) project in Clarksburg, WV
Project will replace approximately 6.5 miles of natural gas pipelines along the Main Street and Pike Street corridor in downtown Clarksburg

MORGANTOWN, WV – In late February, Hope Gas will begin a Pipeline Replacement and Expansion Program (PREP) construction project in downtown Clarksburg, WV. The project will replace approximately 6.5 miles of 1950’s and older era natural gas main lines along the Main Street and Pike Street corridor.
The Hope Gas Pipeline Replacement and Expansion Program (PREP) began in March 2016. Over the lifespan of the program, Hope Gas will upgrade more than 1,000 miles of pipe from bare steel, cast iron, wrought iron and copper pipe to either effectively coated steel or plastic pipe. These enhancements are being conducted to meet all U.S. Department of Transportation regulations. The new pipeline will be more durable and resistant to corrosion, which allows Hope Gas the ability to deliver a commitment to safe, reliable service.
Hope Gas engineers designed the Clarksburg project to take place concurrently with planned water and sewer upgrades by the Clarksburg Water Board in the same area. This coordinated effort will reduce the need for multiple street restorations and minimize inconveniences caused by construction activities as much as possible.
"This Clarksburg area PREP project involves significant construction activity to modernize about 34,000 feet of pipeline infrastructure to reliably serve the homes and businesses in the area today and well into the future,” said Brittany McDaniel, Senior Director of Engineering and Project Management for Hope Gas. “More than 16 months of planning was conducted to minimize the disruption this construction project will cause for local residents, business and motorists. We understand the construction process can be inconvenient and appreciate the cooperation and understanding of those who will be temporarily impacted by this project.”
Key project highlights:
- Construction Start: Construction is weather dependent. Work is expected to start in late February at the intersection of W. Main St and W. Pike St in downtown Clarksburg.
- Timeline: Hope Gas anticipates project construction will continue for approximately 7 months and conclude in fall 2025.
- Work Areas: Construction will take place from the intersection of W. Pike St and Milford St near Wendy’s to the intersection of E Main St and Harrison St in downtown Clarksburg.
- Work Times: Hope Gas construction activities will take place mostly at night. Active construction work will take place Monday thru Friday from approximately 7 PM to 7 AM. Construction activity is weather dependent. Some paving and concrete restoration work will take place during the day. Customer service lines will be switched over to the newly installed pipeline during the day.
- Traffic Control: Through traffic will be maintained with the help of a traffic control vendor.
